Amsterdam Dance Event, the yearly vast and ominous week where the world of electronic music gathers in the Dutch capital. A whirlwind wherein nothing goes as planned and all schedules extend. After two years of notorious pandemic difficulties, ADE is back in full motion. To give you some sort of guidance, we dove into the long-stretched program of artists & speakers to pick out divergent events (in no particular order) that deserve to be squeezed into your ambitious planning. Good luck.
1. Where There Is Light
The need to recalibrate, reflect, and center mental wellness after uncertain years drove artist Tamara Shogaolu to develop Where There Is Light. Inspired by the practice of forest bathing and by the Panamanian rainforest, Where There Is Light is an interactive installation that merges mental wellness with nature through technology by allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a rainforest.
Through Where There Is Light, Tamara Shogaolu hopes to create a space where we can surrender to calmness and focus on our senses as a way to be present in the moment without the grief of what was and the fear of what could have been.
Location: Westerkerk, Prinsengracht 279
Date: Wed Oct 19 - Sat Oct 22 08:30 - 21:00
Entrance to the installation is free.
2. Voices From The Lake + Nadia Struiwigh
This Amsterdam Dance Event Voices From the Lake (Donato Dozzy and Neel) will bring their nonconformist version of ambient and leftfield techno to Muziekgebouw, performing their self-titled debut album in full. Acclaimed as an influential benchmark of spiritually charged ambient techno, the record patiently unfolds free-floating bass and harmonics with meditative gracefulness. Subtle and hypnotic.
The two are a perfect match with producer and DJ Nadia Struiwigh, whose detailed and experimental ambient is just as refined and enchanting. In 2021 she released her third album with the Rotterdam record label Nous'klaer.
The performances will be framed by Loradeniz, an electronic music composer and DJ born in Istanbul and currently based in Amsterdam.
Location: Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam
Date: Wed Oct 19, 19:30 - 00:00

5. YH Presents: Giegling at Yellow House
If you are not familiar with the sun-lit early mornings of Giegling, you should definitely attend this ride at Yellow House in the industry area of Houthavens. The German collective from the culturally rich city of Weimar began with a borrowed sound system in an abandoned club. Now they are well-known for their dusty, nostalgic and heartful dub and minimal house. After some years they are back in Amsterdam with crew familiars like DJ Dustin, Konstantin, Vlada. A soft landing and trip to the moon for your ADE ending.
Location: Yellow House, Danzigerbocht 45 R, Amsterdam
Date: Sun Oct 23, 08:00 - 01:00
6. Dagprogramma DS: Buma Academy x Ableton workshop
De School reintegrates the original purpose of their building; education. On both Wednesday and Thursday, they collaborate with Buma Music Academy to provide an in-depth Ableton workshop about music production skills. Specifically, Thursday caters to young crowds between 12 and 18, as an effort to introduce clubbing culture to a new generation.
Location: De School, Jan van Breemenstraat 1, Amsterdam
Date: Wed Oct 19, 16:00 - 18:00
7. ADE @ Het HEM
Het HEM has a multidisciplinary ADE Friday in store for you, curating a day with both a day program and closing party. The day program consists of a panel talk with Bogomir Doringer, Alyson Sillon and Vinca Petersen on how dance & rave culture influences their work. After that you can enjoy the filmscreening ‘The Sun Has No Shadow’ on contemporary London rave scenes, followed by performances by Alyson Sillon and Arno Schuitemaker. The closing party will be provided by One Eye Witness.
Location: Het HEM, Warmperserij 1, Zaandam
Date: Fri Oct 21, 16:00 - 23:59
8. Draaimolen x Herrensauna
Draaimolen once again invites Berlin collective Herrensauna for this time a 14 hour long rave in the Bijlmerbajes, a former prison in Amsterdam. An abandoned brutalist building seems like the perfect location for the queer collective that is known for beasty and punk-ish parties in the undergrounds of Berlin.
Location: Bijlmerbajes, H.J.E. Wenckebachweg 48, Amsterdam
Date: Sat Oct 22, 18:00 - 8:00
9. Breakfast Club ADE
57 artists scattered over five rooms that are situated in a maze of little hallways, nooks and crannies; sounds like a dream. Breakfast Club gives its first party at the new location Hemkade during the Saturday and Sunday of ADE. The line-up is finger-licking good (as always) with one-of-a-kind b2b's like Spekki Webu and Jane Fitz, and relevant artists such as Russell E.L. Butler, Roza Terenzi, Jeff Mills, D. Tiffany, Sunju Hargun, Van Ahn, DJ Nobu, Volodomyr Gnatenko and many many many more. We dare to say: strongest line-up of ADE by far.
Location: Hemkade 48, Zaandam
Date: Fri Oct 21, 10:00 - 00:00 & Oct 22, 10:00 - 22:00
10. Within Without II
On the 19th of October, the new performance Within Without II is to be seen exclusively in Carré as the opening event of ADE.
In Within Without II, artist Nick Verstand examines our subconscious by light art, music and modern dance. The performance symbolizes the transformation of the self through different stadia. Let yourself be transported into a dream world of light and darkness, sound and space.
Location: Royal Theatre Carré, Amstel 115, Amsterdam
Date: Wed Oct 19, 17:00 - 18:05
