Mondowun’s ‘Frequent Flyer’ marks the second release on growing Sydney (Eora) label, Eko-system, with a four-track tribute to fast-paced DnB and jungle. The EP presents a keyhole into a future world of natural and artificial fusion, finding solace from the certainty and unification of cutting edge electronic dance music.
Eko-system is the label of Eastern Distributor (aka. Jörmungandr) and Yung Lemon who, in their own right, are captivating creators in scenes local and further afield. The imprint garnered immediate interest through its first outing, a split EP featuring three tracks each from the founders spanning acid, breakbeat and techno cuts, which set the tone for the platform. The Eko-system project is a call to action to challenge the ever pervasive effects of modernity, pushing a sound that is both futuristic and reflective of the old school.
Mondowun is an Eora artist who has developed a reputation for versatile DJ sets and crisp productions throughout the city. The Frequent Flyer EP further develops his contemporary take on breakbeats, jungle and drum 'n' bass, creating a harmonious fusion of old and new. ‘Artificial Base Of Love (Deeper Jungle Edit)’ employs textured and natural sounds, such as chirping birds and tension inducing airy pads. The track is underpinned by rolling bass grooves and highly effective drum programming. ‘Port Communication’ leans towards a more IDM soundscape with off-kilter percussion while ‘Hyperstep’ sits in a spacey realm with a gurgling bass and bubbly synth leads.
Minimal Collective’s premiere, ‘Frequent Flyer’ is a drum ‘n bass roller, reminiscent of the early ‘00s sound. With piercing hi-hats and tight breaks merged with a resonant, jump up style baseline, Frequent Flyer is a stand out on an impactful release.
