Variety and fluidity take centre stage in OTON’s New Forms of Silence. Expanding on the sonic themes introduced in the Aurora EP earlier this year on his imprint, ALLIANCE, the Belgian artist broadens his signature live sound into LP format. Fourteen tracks deep, OTON tears through bewitching melodies, speed-rush breakbeats, and driving psychedelic techno.
ALLIANCE is a record label and party series playing a key role in the ever-evolving contours of Brussels’ electronic music landscape. From legendary clubs like Fuse to iconic city landmarks like Le Botanique, its parties thrive on high energy and champion the sound of the local underground. Meanwhile, as a label, it has evolved from initially releasing the sounds of its founder, OTON, to a powerful, thirty-strong various-artist compilation and newer sounds courtesy of DJ Hague.
In New Forms of Silence, OTON returns to his roots in live performance and multi-instrumentalism, reconnecting with the raw and unpredictable nature of on-the-spot sound design. “I locked myself in my flat for three or four months and went into a full analogue workflow,” he recalls. From screwface kickdrums in Voltage Controls to swirling eddies of hypnosis in Hacker and flickering percussion in You Chose Your Chaos, OTON presents a vast spectrum of sound that cuts through contemporary trends and arrives at the meeting point of brooding sound design and syncopated club rhythms.
Minimal Collective premieres TEKBSS, a gnarly bass-driven cut that resonates with listeners attuned to free tekno and the harsher, more abrasive edges of uptempo sound. Marking the album's midpoint, it typifies OTON’s balance of emotions, both sinister and imaginative.
