It’s not often that cinema and sound converge in the way Embryoroom approaches it. Following a year-long process of dialogue, editing and refinement, the New York-based artist presents his twelve-track album ABDUCTOR on Australian label Stock Grazing. Structured across four movements, the record unfolds as a single cinematic work rather than a collection of tracks.
With a background spanning film, sound and installation, Embryoroom operates within a controlled environment of its own. Without suggesting a political reading, ABDUCTOR explores human behaviour shaped by subconscious unease, moving through themes of control, fear and urban tension without ever naming them directly. The work builds through atmosphere rather than argument, arriving before it can be explained.
Nothing in ABDUCTOR is incidental. Track sequencing, typography, timing and visual language are all deliberate, with hidden references embedded throughout. Although divided into twelve tracks, the album functions as a continuous 50-minute sequence, shifting between tension and release with cinematic precision. Friction is preserved throughout, forming part of the work’s emotional core.
Alongside the record, Embryoroom is developing a feature-length film co-produced with Stephen Rutterford under his Shadowrunner alias. Constructed entirely from self-generated AI systems, the film mirrors the album’s themes, moving between perspectives of control and disorientation. Rather than acting as a companion piece, it exists as another form the same work takes.
The connection with the Australian Stock Grazing label is no coincidence. Founded by Isaac Bryson and Rory Bolger, the Canberra-based platform operates outside of trend-driven club culture, focusing on long-form, immersive projects. Their collaboration with Embryoroom reflects that approach, treating ABDUCTOR as a complete body of work rather than a standalone release.
Extending beyond the album, Embryoroom presents a seven-track bonus suite titled Escape from Telstra Tower, written during and following his time in Australia. Emerging from the Canberra shows and surrounding environments, the material shifts towards a more minimal, floor-facing approach. Rather than a continuation, it stands as a parallel body of work, shaped by the physical context in which it was created.
In the final stretch of the album, Black Cruciform carries the tension into its closing moments. Industrial textures spiral through tribal-leaning drums, tightening the sense of control and release that runs throughout the record. As Minimal Collective’s premiere pick, the track captures ABDUCTOR at its most distilled.
