Two pillars of Australian leftfield electronica combine with gi’s ‘Thought Makes Music’ album on Absorb. Through eight far-reaching cuts, gi expands on her growing discography, exploring the furthest edges of IDM and introspective sound design to mind-warping effect.
No stranger to DIY festivals in the bush, thought-provoking club lineups, or serene listening experiences, gi is a true embodiment of the underground. Following recent releases on Altered States Tapes and Beyond The Bridge, ‘Thought Makes Music’ is gi’s most expansive musical output to date presenting a sound inherently linked to its title. Through a set of recurring musical elements, the album emanates a murky atmosphere that traverses the furthest edges of what can be considered dance music. On top of a thought-leading approach to electronic music, gi also fronts Eora-based punk band ‘Optic Nerve’, delivering cut-up lyrics and an anti-authority ethos synonymous with the city's long-standing hardcore scene.
In March this year gi’ performed at ABSORBED, the labels cutting edge festival that programs 37 hours of upended concert music and dizzying performance art at Naarm’s iconic Miscellania Club. Her debut album typifies the sound of Absorb which has been integral in the ongoing development of surreal and far-out sound design in Australia. From the warping harmonies and screeching textures to the metronomic jolts of frequency layered throughout the album, gi expertly navigates the realms between gnarly IDM and blissful ambient. Thought Makes Music draws connections with the world around, following rolling moments of feeling, a confident debut that remains curious, playful, and protective of itself. It unveils its essence in moments of overlap, presenting spacious, metallic sounds deeply attuned to the landscape.
Minimal Collective premieres ‘21, 22, 23’, the opening track of Thought Makes Music which unlocks the gateway to gi’s world of sound that is as fascinating as it is challenging upon first listen. Primal percussion elements intertwine with kaleidoscopic chimes and drones, creating an awe-inspiring listening experience that hooks both senses and spirit.
