Circling back to old shapes, Hitam adds to his imprint Rhiza Semar’s catalogue with its seventh release. Across five tracks, the Amsterdam DJ, producer and sound designer reinforces the ambiguity of his sonic voice between groove and leftfield techno. Whether spacious, earthy or stripped-back, Spirit Hunt is bound by rhythm.
Both Hitam's established sound and the identity of Rhiza Semar reflect an artistic development through organic exploration. From his Eerste Communie residency to launching Rhiza Semar, Hitam has maintained a versatility in which he stays true to previous forms of his music. With rhythm at the core, he now revisits old material that blends with his contemporary lens, in which inspiration from ancient history and spirituality increasingly sketches the world around the music. And so the result is Spirit Hunt, a sequence that ebbs and flows between the surface of direct rhythm and the depth of inner spirit. Perceiving his sonic output as a language, these sometimes seemingly contrasting sides may speak different tongues but originate from the same voice.
Minimal Collective premieres the release’s namesake track, Spirit Hunt. Its emphasis on groove leaves the right space for Hitam’s innovative sound design to subtly blend, until the track feels like a single layer. Speaking directly to the dancefloor, Hitam finds a hypnotic quality in rhythm and movement.
