Head-snapping DnB percussions embedded in spacious sound design characterise Third Space‘s upcoming release ‘dot points’ on Absorb. With rhythm building as lyrical prose, the producer and live act takes a cultivated detour from drone, back to where his exploration into neo-classical experimentalism once began.
Third Space is the brainchild of Naarm's (Melbourne) musical virtuoso, Matt Sabbadini. With a penchant for DnB experiments, Sabbadini links tonal, pulse-based elements with polyrhythms and deceptive time signatures. Through his productions, label, and radio show named ‘Nice Setting’, he seeks to traverse the physicality of sound. This exploration is extended by Third Space’s live shows where stretches within sub-heavy frameworks meet warped field recordings.
Sabbadini's forthcoming release has found its home at Absorb, an independent record label based in Australia, established and curated by Kavil Patel. Alongside its label identity, Absorb hosts an annual festival called ABSORBED, spanning concerts, performances, and left-field dance. Thriving steadily, Absorb remains dedicated to ‘wait-for-it’ listening experiences.
Third Space’s upcoming release ‘dot points’ also triggers thrilling anticipation. Crafted with a keen sense of rhythm and texture, the five-tracker breaks new ground while staying just familiar enough to keep immersion consistent; a notion that's been woven into Third Space's creations from the outset.
In Minimal Collective's premiere selection, 'Whole Mantle Convection', Third Space lives up to his name by evoking a sense of space and width. Through strategic placement of metallic percussion against robust low-ends, Sabbadini deftly prolongs moments of tension and release, providing ample space for texture to take centre stage. The ambience evoked resembles being in a room charged with palpable tension, hinting at an unknown yet rousing feeling ahead.
