Nathan Kofi’s debut album, I Am That I Am, marks a bold new chapter for both the artist and Dutch label De Lichting. A deeply personal six-track odyssey, the record delves into themes of growth, self-discovery, and identity. Kofi navigates creative territory carefully nurtured over time, blending hip-house-leaning ambient, IDM, and breaks, with each track embodying years of evolution and experimentation.
Amsterdam-based DJ and producer Nathan Kofi has been a trailblazer in the electronic music scene for over a decade. Renowned for his innovative style, Kofi seamlessly blends hip-hop elements and breaks with the foundational sounds of Detroit, Chicago, and New York dance music. At the same time, he has a remarkable ability to craft atmospheric and introspective compositions, skillfully incorporating ambient and experimental textures that altogether highlight the nuanced dimensions of electronic music. Beyond the studio, Kofi has been instrumental in shaping Amsterdam’s cultural landscape and nightlife. As a key creative force behind the iconic club De School, he reimagined its future by introducing a dynamic cultural programming division. His vision helped steer the club’s evolution, reaching its celebrated final chapter in January 2024.
Together with befriended artists (queniv, Human Space Machine, Eversines, RDS, Kaap, and Boris Acket), Kofi established De Lichting, a platform self-described as a “coming-of-age story told by a group of music enthusiasts from the same city.” The crew lives and breathes a DIY ethos, handling every aspect of the creative process from music, light installations, and immersive A/V performances internally, giving freedom to shape the image of De Lichting in the way they see best.
Building on this ethos, Kofi’s debut album, I Am What I Am, explores the full depth and breadth of the electronic spectrum, bringing to light years of creative work. From the introspective soundscapes of Wolken to the Detroit-inspired electro rhythms of Efua, Kofi masterfully navigates between genres and moods. Adding to the EP, one-minute visualisers created by Djoa Lekatompessy accompany three of the tracks, enriching the multi-sensory storytelling and deepening the album’s themes.
Minimal Collective premieres Ego, a slower, break-beat-laden cut that soothes the soul by way of blissful ambient tones and simple, yet rich chords layered throughout. A thoughtful listen, where each element gently pulls you deeper into Kofi’s sound.
