After 8 years of silence, the enigmatic Polar Inertia project returns on Anthony Linell’s Northern Electronics label. Formed in 2010 by a group of artists, Polar Inertia transcends visibility, delving into structures that lie beyond the public gaze. This year, they return with the most ambitious project till date: ‘Environment Control’.
The oblique and annihilating transmissions emanating from the workshop of Polar Inertia have been issued intently and surely over the last decade and more. Environment Control grants access to the biggest consignment to date, with eight tracks of mesmeric play that are fraught with clinical impulsiveness and astringent rushes.
The ominous worldbuilding invites you to step into the shoes of the so-called ‘Polar Children’, drawing up a dystopian future wherein failed advanced technologies face a glacial epoch. It manifests as a conceptual universe, where sound, monochrome aesthetics, and elusive narratives converge, much like trying to grasp the intangible fog.
Opening with a didactic transmutation, Polar Inertia swiftly counters our recoil with a menacing display of pressure on 'Smothering Dreams'. The intensity is sustained, as if to suggest that there's now no way back, until the menace relents on our premiere pick 'Arctic Horizon'. Its shimmering gravitational pull amounts to an idealism after the unease that delivered us here.
Encountering the album is much like being absorbed by fog and captivated by its ever-shifting forms and densities, with things being as indistinguishable as in a whiteout.
'Count your heartbeat and breath… Keep counting them… Walk. Slowly.'
