As an architect by trade, jMoy sketches three-dimensional soundscapes that aim to tell spatial narratives. The upcoming Udys EP, a portmanteau of utopia and dystopia, features four unique constructions designed for the latest release from the Amsterdam-based label Sann Odea.
Throughout his master’s degree at TU Delft, jMoy honed his understanding of the relationship between nightclubs and the architecture that gives rise to them. What results is a sound that is attentive to the relationship between the sonic and the spatial. jMoy’s penchant for comprehensive sonic environments sees his debut release fit well amongst as the ninth installment in Sann Odea’s roster of boundary-pushing projects.
Across the four tracks of Udys, jMoy sets out to explore utopian and dystopian narratives, with each track envisioned as its own unique imagination. While each achieves its own distinct affect, the EP is unified by a vernacular built on lively kick drums ornamented with a scattering of haunting melodies.
Minimal Collective’s pick is Rakami, a frenzied workout that channels the most prominent elements of jMoy’s emerging style. The track is driven by an undulating kick, while atmospheric howls grow and develop throughout. The result is an energetic arrangement that sits firmly on the dystopian end of the spectrum.
