Pure Space’s ‘Proximity III’, the third VA in the series, features an outstanding collaboration between rhythmic wizards Zara and Command D. Along nineteen tracks spanning from deep drum and bass to blisteringly fast IDM, the compilation meticulously represents the contemporary Australian scene.
Originally hailing from Eora, now based in Naarm, Zara has been a prominent figure in the Australian scene in recent years, playing consistently up and down the east coast at club nights and bush festivals alike. Her sound utilises deep, atmospheric rhythms that create an exploratory journey through contemporary drum and bass, IDM, and ambient. Zara’s productions swiftly captivated global attention as she skillfully fuses sound, energy, and emotion.
Drawing inspiration from the spaces between the digital realm and the natural world, Charles Fester, aka Command D is a key player in the Eora dance community and the name behind an infamous 2022/23 summer ‘Park Dub’ series in the inner city showing off his skills as a disk jockey and line up curator. A skilled musician in his own respect, with deft productions that present a tight balance of driving tech, complex rhythms, and mesmerising atmospherics.
The Pure Space project no longer needs an introduction in Australia, functioning as a label, event series, and weekly radio show on the legendary FBI radio. The newest VA in the ‘Proximity’ series is the largest yet and hopes to provide an access point to explore the versatile Australian soundscape.
Minimal Collective presents ‘XCD-1’, a five-minute cut embedding ambient textures into a dub-infused, IDM trip. With both artists having contributed to the imprint previously, XCD-1 is a defined blend of their individual styles, and a vital contribution to the compilation focused on experimental electronica.
